Securely Navigate to Online Email, Financial Websites, and Social Networking Sites!
This technique is useful for avoiding malicious websites that prey on computer typing errors to safely reach a web-site whose address (URL) you do not clearly remember. It works by using the Internet Browser search box which is typically located adjacent to the main web site address box. In many cases it will have a pull down (arrow or small triangle) to click for selecting the search engine and a small magnifying glass to symbolize searching within the text box. This is where you will want to type in your search phrase.
If you want to reach on-line email type the name of the email service and the word "mail" into the search box and press enter or left-click on the search tool. Popular on-line email accounts are Google's Gmail, MSN Hotmail and Yahoo. As an example, to find the first one, type in "Google Mail" and press enter. A web page of search results will appear and the appropriate mail link will be one of first few listings. The most important feature to notice is that the expected link has the primary address of google.com or yahoo.com in the link address. This protects you from a mistype of the Internet link and ending up at a malicious web-site. If you mistype in using the search box most Internet Browser engines will prompt with a message like "did you mean …"
You can double up on safety features by using a web screening add-on for your current Internet Browser. For example, WOT is a popular add-on for the Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser. This service will place colored "Donuts" next to each link indicating its safety rating. A green is "good to go", yellow "be very cautious" and red "Stop." AVG's Linkscanner works with Internet Explorer and Spywareblaster is a must have too. CNET is a good place to find these free programs, just go to the download tab on their web-site. By adding these tools to the Browser you have double protection against ending up at a scam site or a malicious malware generating website!
Safe Web Surfing to all.
