Buy a book or watch online tutorials? Switch NLEs? The past two years have been the wild west for both professionals and those learning the craft of editing. Not only do these three prove that asking the question, “Who edited this?” is better than “What was this editied on?”, they prove that knowing the tools, organizing your stuff, and trying new approaches brings about the creativity we all want to show the world.
Going from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere Pro – GET THIS BOOK

As part of the ‘screw FCPX camp’ I decided to make the transition from Final Cut Studio and move to Adobe’s Production Premium suite – thanks to their amazing 50% discount. Final Cut Pro has been my only NLE I’ve used for the past 6 years. I edit a lot of live multicam events, documentaries, promotional videos, and occasionally edit feature films. Most importantly, I have hundreds of archived FCP projects that I might have to open up again.
I recommend the book…
This is a great book. I am learning a lot and still reading it. It also comes with a DVD that helps you to practice, which I have not used yet, but will start soon as the book refers to it quite a bit – they are meant to be used together. The book refers to CS6 which was the new version at the time. I actually have CS5, but so far, it seems to be helping me anyway. This book seemed better for me that any books I saw about CS5…
Useful for first time editors too.

First some background: I’m familiar with NLE editing concepts and read books on the theory of editing. I’ve watched training videos on editing in Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and I am fairly good around computers in general.
A MUST HAVE guide for anyone editing with Premiere Pro CS6

The content is clearly focused on taking you to a professional level of editing. The videos alone are worth the price of admission. I switched to Premiere Pro after the FCP7 debacle, and this book is keeping the momentum moving forward. No where else can you find the three best NLE instructors collaborating on a multi-media project that this guide is. It is truly a guiding light into an incredible editing program that just keeps getting better. I have both editions, and look forward to a third edition when Adobe takes Premiere Pro up to the next level.
Not the best beginning guide
I tried to research well when I selected this book for use with Premiere Pro, but I clearly did not get the best book to use as a general beginning guide. I was making my first video with Premiere Pro. In the end, I found a friend to help me get started, I found a couple youtube videos that were helpful, and a few pages on the web for specific tasks. I found it to be not easy to find what I was looking for and the writing is a bit cumbersome. It’s just not the greatest for quick checks on procedures when you’re learning. It’s okay, but I hope to find a much better guide in the future.
Great Book to Go Beyond the Basics of Editing
I’ve only been editing of four years. Last year I made the switch from FCP 7 to Premier. During those initial years my editing was mouse oriented and dragging. After a month with this book I am using the keyboard more than the mouse. Yes, as some reviews have pointed out there are some errors in the book. When I find one that doesn’t work on my CC version, I just cross it out in the book and move on. This book is for someone who knows the basics of editing and wants to learn what’s under the hood of Premier Pro. The detailed section on Organizing Media has greatly improved my workflow.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough for editors scrambling to re-train on Premiere Pro CS5/5.5. The depth of coverage on more advanced topics such as color grading, hardware optimization and media management will be particularly useful for professional editors. The up-to-date section on Adobe’s Dynamic Link provides vital information to those wishing to integrate their Premiere workflow with After Effects, Audition, Media Encoder and Encore.
Good book, not good Kindle
This is more of a review of the Kindle version of this book rather than the book itself. This is not easy to read as a Kindle book. The graphics get pushed off the screen for the text that fits the graphic. I would recommend for any serious video editor using Premiere Pro to spend the extra few dollars and get the paperback version of this. The content is good; I’ve only found a couple of hard to follow spots in the book, and it is mostly due to the Kindle version. So, I like the book, but don’t like the Kindle offset.
