I have been reading this book for about a 3 months now and I have written a game application based on what I have learned from this book.
Decent intro, but was expecting more considering the price
This is a decent starting point for jQuery Mobile, but considering it costs over $40 I was expecting more. It’s written in an easy to read style so you can quickly read the entire book and have a basic understanding of jQuery Mobile. It does a pretty good job of explaining how jQuery Mobile works, and explaining the key controls/features.
Needed to purchase for work. This wasn’t the greatest book to learn from, but it was a quick read that pointed me in the right direction and that’s all that matters.

Slim Overview Sans Effective Real-World Detail

This book skims the surface and fails to provide the detail for things that really matter – such as form validation, which it does not mention at all. This is important because normal js form validation presents problems with jQuery. At $40., this publication is, basically a waste of time as an aid for anyone unfamiliar with jQuery and jQuery Mobile to put together some respectable code. Some of the overview is helpful and I wouldn’t complain if the book was in the 10 to 12 dollar range. Every example I have tried I have had to go to the Web to find out why it didn’t work right. So the question arises – why did I just spend $40. when there is more precise information available on the Web for free?
Great for the jQuery Mobile hands-on newbie
Over the past few years, an interest in responsive web design (RWD) has expanded exponentially with an ever growing desire for web sites and applications staged on mobile devices (smart phone, tablets, etc.) – for both commercial and personal uses. Likewise, the market and interest in instructional materials regarding RWD development has also grown. But with so many choices how can you choose the book, video, tutorial, podcast, etc., that works best for getting you up to speed on RWD. I had a chance to read jQuery Mobile Web Development Essentials by Raymond Camden and Andy Matthews. And am glad to say it was not a waste of my time. I had a working, though simple, RWD web page up after reading the first few chapters. And I fully understood, from the reading, what was going on.
Good starting point for learning jQuery Mobile
Just finish the book yesterday and I think this book is a good starting point for learning jQuery mobile. First of all, I would like to give it 3.5 star but since amazon not allow half star so well, make it 4 then. The reason behind that base on:
Very good read. Does exactly what it says – give you the essentials
I enjoyed this book. It’s not some great “tome” of a book that goes into every little nook and cranny of Mobile Web Development. It assumes a working knowledge of JS, CSS, and HTML, however a complete noob could read this book and be coding useful pages for mobile phones.
This book does a great job of introducing mobile development with jquery mobile. It helps to drive home the role of data attributes and page structure. As a beginner to mobile development this book was the first that made it easy. Once data attributes are second nature the framework makes creating apps a breeze. The book does a thorough job of covering all the html, theming and script. I’m glad it went into grids as these make jqm much easier to design. In addition to this it also shows how build some simple sites such as an info type site that is mostly static to more dynamic sites. Such as a notekeeper that uses local storage to save notes and shows how to us CRUD on a simple local storage system. I also like how the book went into creating custom themes. If this wasn’t enough they also go into phone gap for a brief (but introductory non the less) explanation to more show the power of using jqm to access the extra features of the phone. And the more complex rss reader , helps to get the reader thinking on more interesting projects. All and all I think the authors do a great job of introducing all these topics without going outside of the scope of the book. Though some more depth and integration with phonegap would be appreciated. The book is great if you want to get up to speed fast without going to deep at first.
Great entry level book, has flavor – bacon
